The Berlin Sessions EP
Recorded by the Daan Sanders Quartet
Berlin: Alexanderplatz, Karl Marx-Allee and Warschauer Strasse. A wild, shimmering and raw city. A city without rules, where everyone can be whoever they want to be. Amsterdam: the 9 Streets, Museumplein, the Vondelpark. A sweet and lovely city - a warm place to come home to.
That's what my music used to be: warm and accessible. When I saw guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel perform at Berlin jazz club Zigzag, however, I knew I couldn't let his roughness pass me by. Rosenwinkel's music is like a slap in your face, just as Berlin was for me.
In the six months I lived in Berlin, my perception of what my music should sound like changed. The relaxed jazz of my own trio did not fit this new vision. I was looking for the immediacy of cold Berlin; with that came a raw, distorted guitar sound that would stand head and shoulders above the rest of the band, just as the Fernsehturm towers over the city.
I composed my new music in Berlin and then recorded it in Amsterdam with three fantastic musicians. Prepare for raw jazz that makes no bones about it: The Berlin Sessions EP is live now!
